He was 27 and the son of the late Thomas Heddle and of Catherine Irvine Heddle, of Horraldshay, Finstown, Orkney, Scotland.

Finstown in the parish of Firth on Mainland, Orkney, Scotland is the fourth-largest settlement on the island.
