Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

77 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 7th February 1947, Private Gustave Augustus Peterson (Petersen), 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-3313), labourer (E Bramble, Newcastle, N.S.W.), from 14 and 11 Union Lane, Newcastle, New South Wales and 7 Dangar Street, Wickham, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. METHODIST 3 (UNITING) F. 51.

Death certificate states that Gus died on the 5th February 1947 as Augustus Adolph Petersen.
Born at Morpeth, New South Wales on the 7th May 1881 to William, died 19.10.1927, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, buried at CATHOLIC 1-4.34, and Jane Ann Peterson, died 4.12.1920, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-5. 62; husband of Mabel Victoria L Peterson nee Dronsfield (married 1900, Newcastle, N.S.W., as AUGUSTUS A PETERSEN, died 23.6.1962, Newcastle, N.S.W., as PETERSON, resting together), Gus enlisted on the 17th February 1917 at Newcastle, N.S.W. as Augustus Petersen.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on the 9th May 1917.

Admitted to hospital 21.1.1918 (haemorrhoids).

Commenced return to Australia 13.3.1919.


Gus arrived home on the 24th April 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 24th May 1919.

Mr. Peterson’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour.

The tragic circumstances of Gus’s death were reported (see link) - report that Gus being killed when run over by a truck.

I have placed poppies at Gus’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
