Born Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. Son of Samuel and Sarah Ann Bawden of 47 Hudson Road, Plumstead, Kent, England. A munitions worker prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force at Rainbow, Victoria on 3 April 1915. He embarked from Melbourne for overseas on 8 May 1915 aboard HMAT "Ulysses" (A38). He was wounded in action in France on 27 July 1916. He returned to Australia on 5 February 1918 and was discharged medically unfit. He died from pneumonia and bronchitis, aged 25 years.

He is a recent addition to the roll of Great War dead; he was accepted, after research, for commemoration as war dead on 24 August 2012.
