The 58th name inscribed is Lance Corporal Ernest James Wheatley.

On the Thursday afternoon of the 4th September 1952, the funeral was held at Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W. for Lance Corporal Ernest James Wheatley, referred to as Curley, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1265), billiard maker from Vincent Street, Cessnock, New South Wales and Howard Street, Warners Bay, N.S.W., age 69 years 3 months. Ashes interred Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W., date unknown. Location of Ashes - Rose Fa 5/6.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 24th May 1883 to Charles Louis, died 11.4.1922, Minmi, N.S.W., age 70, buried at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Right Hand Side, Section 27, Plot 007, unmarked grave and Mary Jane Wheatley nee Ritchie, died 3.6.1940, Cessnock, N.S.W., age?, mother of 8, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Right Hand Side, Section 27, Plot 007, unmarked grave; husband of Isabella Parker Wheatley nee Hill, married 1922, Cessnock, N.S.W., died 4.9.1986, Belmont North, N.S.W., age 95, 34 years a widow.

Curley enlisted on the 19th January 1916, age 32 years 7 months, at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.

Admitted to hospital 11.10.1916 (influenza).

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.

Appointed Lance Corporal in France 7.1.1917.

Wounded in action - 8.6.1917 (GSW left shoulder & head, Battle of Messines).

Admitted to hospital 11.7.1917.

Curley arrived home on the 16th April 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 16th October 1918.

Mr. Wheatley’s name has also been inscribed on the Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour and the Cessnock War Memorial. Service record states Died, 3/9/1952, Imp War Graves List No. 125.

Name not inscribed on the Kurri Kurri War Memorial.
