John Alexander Reid must have been excited and eager to go to war because on his enlistment papers he claimed he was eighteen years of age but according to the South Australian birth records he was born in April 1899, making him only about sixteen years of age. He also stated both his parents were dead but Thomas Alexander Reid and Marguerite Gooley were alive and well living in Bordertown.
John stood five feet and six inches tall, had dark brown hair. His occupation was a blacksmith's striker before he went off to war. He enlisted on the 19th of August, 1915. He was put into the 9th Light Horse Brigade and given service number 1598.
During war John Reid travelled to Egypt and then went to England. He was mustered as a Gunner and proceeded to France on the 27th March, 1918 from Heytesbury. He was taken on strength into the Second Divisional Ammunition Column. He transferred as a driver to the 4th Field Artillery Brigade on April 4th 1918. He was discharged on 30/9/19.
When he came back he married Mabel Reid.
He died at Concord Military Hospital on September 22nd, 1952.
