Charles Jacob Mildren was born in 1896 in Wabba, Victoria. He was one of nine children to Edward King and Margaret Grant Mildren, and his religion was Presbyterian. After attending schools in Berringama, Khancoban and Towong, Charles became a labourer. 

At the age of 20, Charles enlisted on the 28th of February, 1916. He was allocated the Regimental Number 519 and was posted into the 39th Battalion, B Company as a Private. His unit embarked on HMAT A11 Ascanius from Melbourne on the 27th of May, 1916. 

On the 22nd of November in 1916, Charles proceeded overseas to France from Southampton. He was awarded a Military Medal for bravery in the field 24th June 1917. He was then appointed Lance Corporal on the 15th of July, 1917. Three months later, he was promoted to Corporal. On the 28th of December, 1917, Charles was admitted to the hospital with a sickness. He was admitted again to a hospital in France two months later. On the 20th of March, 1918, Charles was transferred to Devonport's main hospital with appendicitis. He was discharged from hospital on the 11th of April, 1918. Charles embarked on the hospital ship Carisbrook Castle with appendicitis to England on the 19th of April, 1918. On 20th of March, 1918, Charles was admitted to Devonport hospital with severe appendicitis. He proceeded overseas to France from Southampton on the 19th of June, 1918. For his services, Charles was awarded the Military Medal, Victory Medal and British War Medal.

After the war, Charles moved back to Corryong and became a farmer. He died on the 14th of January, 1975 and was buried in the Corryong Cemetery. Charles is still remembered on the Corryong, Wabba and Berringama districts pictorial honour roll and the Khancoban district pictorial honour roll.
