Died on this date – 28th September…… Frederick Stanley Anderson Irwin was born at Caulfield, Melbourne, Victoria on 30th May, 1884.

He married Gladys Simpson in Victoria in 1909. A son, John Anderson Irwin, was born on 8th February, 1910 at Northcote, Victoria.

A son was stillborn to Gladys & Frederick Irwin on 24th April, 1916. Gladys Irwin, wife of Frederick Stanley Anderson Irwin, died on 24th April, 1916 at Fitzroy North, Melbourne, Victoria. She was buried in Heidelberg Cemetery, Victoria.

On 19th February, 1917 Frederick Stanley Anderson Irwin enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force as a 32 year old, widower, Secretary from “Tyrone”, Clifton Grove, Ivanhoe, Victoria.

[According to information supplied for the Roll of Honour by Amelia Simpson (late wife’s mother) Frederick Stanley Irwin was a Clerk in Trustees & Executors.]

Private Frederick Stanley Anderson Irwin, Service number 1907, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 4th August, 1917 with the Australian Flying Corps, May, 1917 Reinforcements.

He was admitted to Ship’s Hospital on 13th August, 1917 with Influenza & was discharged on 15th August, 1917. Private Irwin was readmitted to Ship’s Hospital on 30th August, 1917 with Pneumonia.

Private Frederick Stanley Anderson Irwin died at 3 pm on 28th September, 1917 while at Sea on board HMAT Themistocles (A32) from Pneumonia & Septicaemia.

He was buried at Sea on 28th September, 1917 with full Military Honours & is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
