"LIEUTENANT HUGH JAMES, Awarded the Military Cross for Gallantry. Formerly Captain and Champion of the Richmond Football Club. Lieutenant Hugh James has, according to information supplied by Mr. W. A. Maybury, secretary of the Richmond Football Club, been awarded the Military Cross, the official despatch stating that the honor was gained "by conspicuous gallantry in repairing a bridge under heavy fire, thereby setting an inspiriting example to his men." Lieuitenant James was, some little time ago, slightly wounded, but was soon on duty again." - from the Richmond Guardian 12 Jan 1918 (nla.gov.au)
