On Active Service 1st July 1915
Dear George,
I hope by the time you get this letter that things will have improved down your way, and that dirt will wash free from Antimony.
I received a letter a few weeks back from your mother giving me most of the news.
At present we are in the middle of summer here and I can tell you that it is a trifle hot.
So far, I have not come across Waddell or ???? but after a bit of trouble I found out what crowd they are with so I should not have much difficulty in finding them, the first chance I get.
We are progressing favourably here now having some exciting times now and again.
When the artillery start one can hear the shells buzzing along in all directions, but one soon learns the difference between ours and the enemy’s. All the troops have become like rabbits living in dugouts as protection against the shells.
For the last two night the weather has been very unsettled and we had a downpour last night amidst some heavy thunder and lightning.
Had a very exciting time the other night when a bomb landed amidst us, but owing to the presence of mind of one of the chaps who put a pack on it, the thing did little damage only wounding two.
Well George I have become an early riser now having to turn out at 3am every morning none of the old tent capers.
Last Monday we had a little go with the Turks, given them a severe doing on our right and giving them trouble all down the line.
Well George I don’t think the Turks will last out very long now as we have got them fairly tight, and I hope to get to Constantinople in 2 months from now.
I will close now but will write again soon, My best love to Auntie and all at home.
I remain your cousin
R.L. Hampton
