#2881 [John] Richard Hill joined the AIF on 7 February 1916, from Armidale, NSW, when he was 35 years. He was described as 5 feet, 10 ½ inches, 144 lbs. (65kgs), with a dark complexion, blue eyes, and grey hair. Under distinctive marks, John was listed as circumcised.

John served in the 1st Light Horse Training Regiment initially and on completion on basic training was sent to Moascar Isolation Camp, Egypt (the site of the training area for the 1st and 2nd ANZAC divisions), on the RMS Malwa, arriving 25 August, 1916.

On 18 November 1916, at the School of Instruction, in Zeitoun, Egypt, John receive training as a Class 1 gunner, and upon returning to Moascar transferred to the 1st Light Horse Regiment.

John was admitted to hospital on 7th June 1917, for Nephritis (a condition in which the tissues in the kidney become inflamed and have problems filtering waste from the blood), the first of many visits. As his condition deteriorated, John was transferred to Cairo, 24th Cairo Hospital, Heliopolis, on 7th June 1917, and eventually on to the No. 21 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, in Wiltshire, England, on 11 November 1917.

Whilst at Wiltshire John was deemed as ‘Permanently Unfit’, with Chronic Interstitial Nephritis, a pre-existing condition aggravated by Active Service, by an Army Medical Board on 20 December 1917, returning to Australia on the HMAT Wiltshire, for eventual discharged from the AIF on 17 April 1918.

Private John Richard Hill Jr. was awarded the Star Medal, British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service.
