Bertram Thomas Haskell was born in 1876 in Portsea, Hampshire, England, to George Purkis Haskell and Jessy Haskell (nee Gover). He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Brisbane on 12 July 1915, stating his age as 39, occupation as labourer and naming a brother in Portsmouth, England as his next of kin. On 9 November 1915, he embarked for overseas service from Melbourne Victoria on board HMAT Wandilla with the 31st Battalion.
He experienced ongoing eye trouble throughout his service. In February 1916, defective vision was noted, and he underwent eye surgery in August of that year.
In December 1916, he was admitted to hospital while sick, and in April and July 1917 his defective vision was again recorded. In June the following year, he was admitted once more for further eye examinations. In December 1918, he returned to Australia aboard the troopship Leicestershire, which arrived in January 1919, and he was subsequently discharged from the Australian Imperial Force in March 1919.
Following his return to Australia, he is recorded as living in Manly, Brisbane, in 1921 and 1925, where he was employed as a labourer, and later, between 1936 and 1943, residing at Wharf Street, Brisbane, continuing his work as a labourer.
Private Bertram Thomas Haskell died on 22 August 1944, aged 68, and was buried in Anzac Portion 7, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
