On the 14th November 1959, Private Louis Charles Cognet, 31st Battalion (Reg No-2297), wheeler or miner and labourer from Sheddon's Estate, Cessnock, New South Wales and Wallsend Street, Stanford Merthyr, N.S.W. (1926) and Doyle Street, Cessnock, N.S.W. (1933) and 34 James Street, West End, Cessnock, N.S.W. (1935) and Unemployed Settlement, East End, Cessnock, N.S.W. (1939), father of Louis and Annie, was laid to rest at Cessnock Cemetery, N.S.W., possibly at Methodist, Section 10, Row 13, Lot 367, age 70 years 2 months.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 18th August 1889 to Louis Jnr, died 16.12.1908, Minmi, N.S.W., age 57, buried at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Left Hand Side, Section 06, Plot 008, unmarked grave, and Alice Cognet nee Ryan, died 9.1.1905, Minmi, N.S.W., age 45, mother of 4?, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Left Hand Side, Section 06, Plot 008, unmarked grave, no death or funeral notice located; husband of Lillian (Lillie) Cognet nee Baines, married?, died 20.10.1926, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., age 36, sleeping at Kurri Kurri General Cemetery, N.S.W., re-married to Mary Ann Cognet nee Teasdale 1932, Cessnock, N.S.W., died 14.4.1959, Cessnock, N.S.W., age 70, sleeping at Cessnock Cemetery, Methodist, Section 10, Row 13, Lot 367. Sister, Mrs. Marie Ball, born 12?.9?.1891?, Minmi, N.S.W., married Henry (Harry) Ball 1911, Minmi, N.S.W., Marie died tragically 17.5.1924, Cessnock, N.S.W., age 32, sleeping at Cessnock Cemetery, N.S.W., Wesleyan, Section 1, Lot 33, mother of 6, from Sheddon's Estate, or Shedden Street, Cessnock, New South Wales.

Louis enlisted on the 25th August 1915, age 26 years, at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 14th March 1916.

Disembarked Suez, Egypt 5.4.1916.

Admitted to hospital 3.5.1916 (gastric ulcer, mild).

Commenced return to Australia 5.7.1916.

Louis arrived home invalided on the 3rd August 1916 suffering from a gastric ulcer, being discharged medically unfit on the 10th October 1916.

Did not serve in a theatre of war, therefore was not granted Victory Medal.

Also served 2nd A.I.F., enlisted 23.1.1941, Cessnock, N.S.W., Service No-N102071, Private, 8th Garrison Battalion, 75 days service.

Not officially commemorated.

Mr. Cognet’s name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial. Name not inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour who returned home.

I would like to see poppies placed at Louis’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother John Cognet, referred to as Pete, born 1.4.1896, Minmi, New South Wales, single clipper from Minmi, New South Wales or C/O Harry Ball, Sheddon's Estate, Cessnock, N.S.W., enlisted 13.9.1915, age 19 years 5 months, Newcastle, N.S.W., 31st Battalion, Reg No-2124, KIA 26.9.1917, The Battle of Polygon Wood, Belgium, age 21 years 5 months.
