CHAPLAIN OF THE FIRST A. I. F. DIES
Requim Mass For Father J. Halpin

THE Rev. Father John Halpin, chaplain of the 36th Battalion, A.I.F., in the first world war, died last Sunday, aged 67. Father Halpin was the son of an Irish member of the House of Commons and an uncle of the Rev. Father Kevin Halpin, O.F.M., Melbourne radio orator.

In recent years Father John Halpin had been living in retirement, and his death occurred at Grey street, Concord. His last parochial appointment in the Archdiocese of Sydney was when he was made parish priest of Redfern for two years from June,1945, to June, 1947. Ill-health previously caused him to relinquish his duties as parish priest of Granville in 1941. He had been appointed to Granville in 1933. Between 1941 and 1945 Father Halpin had for some time been chaplain at the De La Salle Training College, Oak Hill, Castle Hill. Born on July 26, 1884, Father Halpin was the son of James Halpin, M.P., and Mrs. Johanna Halpin. From his home at Newmarket-on-Fergus, County Clare, John Halpin went to All Hallows College, Dublin, to study for the priesthood, and was ordained there on June 24, 1910. He arrived in Sydney on October 26 of the same year and received his first appointment as assistant priest at Concord. He enlisted in 1916 and became a member of the 36th Battalion ('Carmichael's Battalion'). Upon his discharge in 1919 he was made administrator of St. Benedict's, Broadway, and remained there until he was posted to St. Mary's Cathedral for about six months in 1926-1927. Father Halpin was placed in charge of Watson's Bay from 1927 to 1931 and from 1932 to 1933 was in charge of Burragorang. His next appointment was to Granville. His Grace Archbishop O'Brien presided at Solemn Requiem Mass offered at Hurstville on Tuesday morning. Further details will be published in 'The Catholic Weekly' next week. — R.I.P.
