Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private William James Garlick (Service No:6334) enlisted in the AIF on 18 October 1916 and was attached to 23rd Infantry Battalion on 23 November 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Plymouth on board HMAT A20 Hororata. Private Garlick served in France, where he was WiA on 20 September 1917 (GSW thigh) and evacuated to hospital in England. Private Garlick embarked from England for Melbourne on 31 January 1918 on board HT Osterley, and was attached to 23rd Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 17 May 1918.

Born at Snapper Point (Mornington), Victoria in 1887, Jim was fifth of eight children of Joseph Garlick (b1855 in Geelong, Victoria) and Catherine Thompson (b1859 at Moorabbin, Victoria). Joseph had left Barwon with his family and siblings in 1863 to settle in Mornington - in an area off Fishermans Beach known as Billy Goat Flats. Joseph was a Labourer in 1876 when he and Catherine married in Melbourne. They settled at Snapper Point (now Mornington), where they raised their family and Joseph worked as a Labourer and Caretaker of Mornington Park.

Jim worked as a Labourer in Mornington, and was a Furnaceman in Melbourne in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, in 1921 in Melbourne he married Laura Frances Pearson (b1896 in Lefroy, Tasmania). Jim and Laura settled in Mornington, where they raised their family and Jim was a Fisherman and Labourer. Laura died in 1954 and Jim in 1959.
