Leo Daniel Slattery was born in 1899, North Adelaide, South Australia. He had a father, mother, and brother. He was a stable boy with hazel eyes who weighed 45kg and was 5'2 by the age of 18.
He enlisted in May 1917, claiming he was 18. He left Australia in November and reached his regiment in the Middle East on 2 February 1918. After a brief stay in hospital he survived the war unscathed.
He was issued the British War Medal, and Victory Medal, but he was advised to return to Australia due to Next of Kin. One of his relatives were likely injured leading to the return. He returned to Australia on the 10th of July 1919 along with his father, and on the 19th, his brother returned to Australia.
