Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

2nd Lt. David Whyte Hardie, a native-born Scotsman who had come to Australia to farm in 1909, near Guildford NSW, enlisted with the original 35th Battalion AIF, and left Australia in May 1916.

He was discharged from the AIF on 16 March 1917 to accept a commission with the RFC

Only four days after the death of Hughes he unfortunately became the last victim of Lt. Rudolf Wendelmuth who scored this final 14th victory on the 18 November 1917 at 13.10 hours over Lampernisse, against Hardie’s BF2b of 48th Squadron RFC. The machine was hit, and fell in flames. Lieutenant Hardie jumped from it before it reached the ground, and was killed instantly. The pilot (19 years of age) 2nd Lt. William Sommerville McLaren was terribly burnt, and lived till evening.
