| 23 Aug 1916: | Honoured Military Medal, For conspicuous gallantry on the 23rd of August 1916 at RVI wood. This man was a volunteer for work in a tank end during the attack when the tank was almost on the final objective it was hit by a shell and put out of action. This soldier received a severe wounding and was ordered to the rear by the Doctor, but when he heard that the platoon had suffered severe casualties, on his accord he rejoined his Coy in the front line. He volunteered for duty in a most forward post. which was at that time under heavy shell and Machine Gun fire. His fine example was a great incentive to every man in his platoon. | |
