61 years ago today, on the 31st July 1963, Private John William Hammond Brinkley, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1786), carter and Newcastle Baths caretaker, from 93 Darby Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 81. ANGLICAN 1-21. 65. Never married.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 29th November 1881 to Jonathan (Johathon), died 11.5.1925, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 71, buried at ANGLICAN 1-21. 63, from 93 Darby Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, and Rosette (Rosetta) Brinkley nee Swinden, died 5.4.1941, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 84?, mother of 7, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-21. 63, from from 93 Darby Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, John enlisted on the 5th March 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on the 4th September 1916.

Admitted to hospital 8.8.1917 (not stated).

Wounded in action - 29.5.1917 (not stated, remained on duty), 30.9.1917 (GSW, compound fracture right clavicle, severe).

Commenced return to Australia 30.1.1918.

John arrived home on the 21st March 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 19th April 1918.

Mr. Brinkley’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill St. John's Anglican Church Honor Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
