Meeniyan Fire 22 Dec1931
Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Tuesday 22 December 1931, page 12
MEENIYAN, Monday Another fire–the fourth in a few months–occurred in the main street of Meeniyan about 9 o'clock on Sunday morning, and the Meeniyan Garage and adjoining four-roomed residence were burnt. The propertv was owned by Mr. E. Cochrane, of the Meeniyan Hotel, and was occupied by Mr. S. R. Dalliston. The cause of the fire is not known, but the flames had a good hold when noticed by Mrs. Dalliston. Mrs. Pentreath gave the alarm, and the ringing of the school bell summoned the townspeople, including the congregation at the Roman Catholic Church. It was impossible to save the stock in the garage, which included a Ford truck and a motor cycle. The stock was not insured, but the buildings were insured. The furniture in the house was saved, and despite a strong wind the flames were checked before they reached the adjoining post office and shop and dwelling, occupied by Mr. D. McKillerick. There is no water supply in Meeniyan. After the fire a number of citizens met to discuss means of helping Mr. Dalliston, and in a few minutes more than £20 was subscribed.

Biography contributed by Robert Wight
4379 Private (Pte) Sydney Rae Dalliston, 23rd Battalion was a biograph operator from Leongatha, Victoria prior to enlistment.
Pte Dalliston embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Melbourne on RMS Malwa on 23 April 1916. Later suffering from trench feet and enteritis, he was evacuated to England.
Due to the fact that his toes were frostbitten, he returned to Australia on 3 July 1917 and was medically discharged.
