'Daniel enlisted on 14 January 1915 and was given the service number 1921. He saw action in Gallipoli and in the Somme during World War I. He was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, near Pozieres, France on 16 August 1916.

Daniel had a wife and five children, living in Thebarton. Unfortunately, Mrs Coleman died in January 1917, leaving the children as orphans and in the care of the state. Daniel’s body was never found, and he is commemorated at the Australian National Memorial, Villers Bretonneux, France.'
