Son of Henry Charles Orchard and Margaret Jane Orchard nee Cook of Boisdale Road, Maffra, Victoria.
Brother of Daniel James Orchard who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 while serving with the 5th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Panel 7; Walter Ernest Orchard who returned to Australia on 4 January 1920 having served with the 46th Battalion.
Commenced return to Australia on 25 August 1917 aboard HT Benalla disembarking on 24 October 1917
