The son of John and Eleanor Stapleton, Unanderra, Illawarra, New South Wales, Private William Stapleton was 26 years of age, and, at the time of enlisting, was on the staff of Wollongong Post Office. He was a prominent Rugby League footballer, being captain of the Unanderra Club, and was also member of Wollongong Orchestra.
