A distant relative of mine Ernest Eden Tapscott (Fourth cousin once removed) had enlisted into the First Australian Imperial Force in 1915 in World War One. He was no doubt driven by a desire for adventure, to travel the world for free, and a desire to get into the fight. He stopped in Aden before going through the Red Sea to Egypt which was also, at the time, a British colony.
He did his training in Egypt, before he could be deployed to the Gallipoli campaign to fight the Turks. He was hospitalized in Egypt with typhus. He bounced around from a series of hospitals in places like Cairo, Port Said and Alexandria before being sent back to Melbourne, Australia by way of the Suez Canal, never to join the fight in Turkey. Back home in Australia he had attempted to re-enlist according to his service record.
All through his time in Egypt, his mother and sister had written worriedly to the Army about his condition as well as to his whereabouts. Very interesting considering I didn't even know I had Australian ancestors until quite recently.
