Eric Llewellyn Hutchins

Lake Terrace Cemetery-Unmarked Graves-Eric Llewellyn Hutchins, died 12 October 1919, Aged 35 years.
Born on 17 April 1884, in Adelaide, Eric was the son of Miss Margaret Hutchins. He came to Mount Gambier with his mother when still a young boy. In January, 1892, Margaret was married to Mr Julius Carozzi at St Paul’s Church. Julius established the Mount Gambier Grammar School when he came to the town in 1890.
In May 1916, during World War One, Eric enlisted for active service. He listed his occupation as ‘cook’ and so he was assigned this role during his service. Before he left Eric was married to Miss Ellen Clare Chuck on 17 August 1916. The ceremony took place at the Methodist Church in Tarpeena. Ellen was the daughter of James and Martha Chuck of Tarpeena.
Eric left Australia for Egypt in February 1917 with the 9th Light Horse Regiment, 25thReinforcement. Although he served as a cook he likely still saw some active duty. Eric returned to Australia in April 1919.
It is not clear if Eric died of illness or an accident. He passed away at Nurse Nightingale’s Private Hospital, which was also known as St Neot’s. He was only 35 years old. Eric and Ellen did not have any children.
In 1920 Ellen remarried to Franklin John Little, who had lost his wife a few years earlier. They made their home at Tarpeena.
