Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
73 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 17th July 1952, Private Joseph Lake, 1st Battalion (Reg No-60241), carter from 124 Lambton Road, New Lambton (Broadmeadow), New South Wales and 3 Kings Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., father of two, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. ANGLICAN 3-187. 29.
Born at New Lambton, New South Wales on the 2nd May 1898 to John Thomas, died tragically 10.3.1909, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age?, buried at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) M SE. 9, and Mary Ann Lake nee Lonsdale, died 26.6.1949, New Lambton, N.S.W., age?, 37 years a widow, sleeping at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) M SE. 9, from 124 Lambton Road, New Lambton (Broadmeadow), New South Wales; husband of Mona Lake nee Allen, married 1923, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 15.6.1973, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 76, 21 years a widow, sleeping here, Joe enlisted on the 12th April 1918 with the 16th NSW Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A41 Bakara on the 4th September 1918.
Admitted to hospital at sea 16.10.1918 (influenza).
Disembarked London 14.11.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 23.7.1919.
Joe arrived home on the 10th September 1919, being discharged on the 26th September 1919.
Joseph did not receive the Victory Medal as he did not actively participate in a theatre of war.
Mr. Lake’s name has been inscribed on the New Lambton Literary Institute Roll of Honour. Name not inscribed on the New Lambton Public School Roll of Honour or the New Lambton War Memorial Gates or the Lambton and New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor.
I have placed poppies at Joe’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
