Biography contributed by Larna Malone

Charles William Woodham was born in 1895 in Inglewood, Vic, the son of William Joseph Woodham and Elizabeth (Bessie) Janet Anderson.   Later, the family moved to Dunolly, Vic., and then to Mildura.   William Joseph Woodham worked as a Saddler, and was a well known public figure as Councillor in Inglewood, Mayor of Dunolly, and then member of the Mildura City Council.

In July, 1915, Charles William Woodham was employed as a Telephonist in Malvern.   He applied for Leave from his employer, the Post Master General's Department, in order to enlist in the AIF, and Leave was granted.   His Application to Enlist carries the signatures of both parents, signifying their consent to his enlistment.

After a period of initial training he was appointed to 13/5th Bn and embarked for overseas on 29th December as A/Sergeant.   In Egypt he was TOS 5th Battalion and reverted to the rank of Private.   He embarked for France with the battalion, arriving in Marseilles on 30th March, 1916.   While serving in France he was promoted to L/Cpl and then to Cpl.

He was Wounded in Action on 9th December, 1916, sustaining a GSW to his left foot.   He was admitted to hospital in France and was then transferred to England and admitted to the Royal Victorian Hospital, Netley, London, on 16th December, 1916.   After months in hospital when his condition gradually improved from 'seriously ill' to 'improved' and then to 'progressing favourably' he RTA for discharge per Hospital Transport Miltiades.   He arrived in Melbourne on 2nd July, 1917, and was discharged from the AIF on 26th December, classified Medically Unfit.

In 1918 he married Isla Florence Bonthorne.   He died in Geelong on 18th August, 1979, and was buried in the Geelong Eastern Cemetery.   Lawn E   Grave 1139
