WW1

The details provided are taken from the book "Just Soldiers" written by WO1 Darryl Kelly, published 2004. Refer to chapter 13 pages 83-88. Prior to the war he lived near Warwick Qld. Enlisted 21 Sep 1914 and allocated to 15th Infantry Battalion. He was with the Unit when they landed at Gallipoli. He became known as a very calm soldier, inspiring others to their tasks. He was wounded 12 May 1915 and evacuated to the Australian General Hospital in Egypt, requiring treatment for the next 4 months. Returned to the Unit in Sept 1915 and promoted to Corporal, then only 5 weeks later to Sergeant. In Nov 1915 he was hospitalised with Mumps, and he rejoined the Unit when they returned from Gallipoli. The AIF reorganised in Egypt and then went to the Western Front for the remainder of the war. Many of the Unit transferred to the 47th Bn, but Henry stayed with the 15th and soon promoted to Company Sergeant Major. They sailed for the Western Front June 1916, serving at Pozieres and Mouquet Farm among other locations. An action at this period saw his C Coy advance to capture German positions eventually to retire, the actions of Henry Eibel earning his a Mention in Dispatches award. The vacancies within the Battalion enabled Henry to be promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. The 15th Bn was in action April 1917 on the Hindenburg line and at the Battle of Bullecourt. An advance of the Unit under heavy fire saw him get a serious wound to the chest, and he died accepting death as he accepted life - without fear or favour. Lest We Forget
