Alfred Alexander Johnston was born c. September 1893 in Gawler, South Australia. He grew up to be a Shop Assistant before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Forces for World War 1 on the 1st of July 1915 at the age of 22.

He served in Egypt and the Western Front, mostly with the 4th Field Bakery (where he transferred in March 1916). Johnston commenced return to Australia from Devonport on board HT 'Sardinia', 19 April 1919. He disembarked at Adelaide, 3 June 1919 and was discharged there as medically unfit on 22 August 1919.

He passed away on 7th of December 1921 and is buried at AIF Cemetery, West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, Row 6 East, Grave 14.
