Biography contributed by Robert Kearney

Raid on Celtic Wood

Among the 19 unwounded men who returned from the raid was 5205 Private Charles Sims who was in the field with C Company on the day of the raid.

In Frederick Pybus’ Red Cross file under the heading of ‘Wounded and Missing 8.10.17’ when interviewed on 9 January 1918 about the death of Pybus on 9 October, Private Sims said, Pybus was in C Coy and was wounded in the back. ‘We retired and he was left and if alive must be a prisoner of war.’

In the same file under the heading ‘wnd and missing 8.10.17’ is a statement Sims made on 2 February 1918. -  ‘I last saw No. 150 Private Pybus F.H. 10th Battalion, near Polygon Wood, Belgium, early in October 1917. He took part in the charge against the German trenches and was in my platoon. He was lying on the ground wounded. This is the last I saw of him.'

In yet another file headed ‘Killed in Action 9 October 1917’ when interviewed again on 4 June 1918,  Private Sims said  ‘Pybus was in “No Man’s Land” and was left on the field wounded when the line retired at Polygon Wood, but I can’t say if he was taken P/W or not. He was wounded in the leg.’

Charles Sims returned to Australia in June 1918.
