Post War years
Robert Edward Graham was my grandfather. I am new to researching his military service history. He never really spoke of his service. I know from preliminary research he enlisted as and 18 year old on 1/9/1915 and embarked for active service on 2/5/16 from Melbourne on HMAT Kabinga (Ship number: A58).
Records reveal that he was a Letter Carrier at the time of enlistment, aged 18 years and 8 months and was 5' 6-3/4" tall, and weighed 136 lbs. He returned to Australia on 10/8/19 and was Discharged 25/9/19.
I understand he served in the Middle East during WW1. He was a member of the 9th Light Horse Regiment and was later transferred to the 3rd Signal Troop (in the Light Horse I believe).
I do have some small photographs at home of some of his activity whilst in the Middle East. Some have notations on the back of them that indicate there were letters with the photographs but am led to believe the letters were disposed of (by and aunty) after R.E.'s death.
Post war, my grandfather worked for the P.M.G. and was Superintendent at the Adelaide GPO (Mail exchange) prior to his retirement. He was also heavily involved with amateur athletics and was Honourary Secretary of the South Australian Amateur Athletic Association for over 50 years. He received an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his work with the Athletic Association.
I believe he was a champion middle distant runner post military service and am still researching this aspect of his life.
He married Ada Homes and that had two sons, Ross Leyland Graham and Jack Richard Graham, and both served in WW2.
I understand that while overseas with the Light Horse he was hospitalised on a couple of occasions with diptheria.
I am hoping to locate and submit the photographs for information.
