Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Charles Staines came from a broken family, born in 1896 to James and Jenny Staines. The father died when the Charles was an infant and when he enlisted, he gave his next of kin as a guardian, Mr. Green of Paddington Reformatory.

His younger brother Walter Staines also enlisted, and he gave his next of kin as none, and referred to himself as a ‘State boy’. It seems both boys were for some time in the care of guardians or foster parents.

Charles was killed in action near Ypres after almost 12 months on the Western Front. His brother, 5118 Pte. Walter Staines 30th Battalion AIF was killed in action five months later on 19 March 1918, aged 19.

Charles’s birth mother, Jenny Staines, was eventually awarded his war gratuity and medals. His married sister, Janet, received his personal effects.
