Thomas Farrel was born in Port Augusta, South Australia on the of 23rd June 1894. He was the son of John Farrell and Carloine Nee Morgan. He was a Roman Catholic. On 4th March 1916 he was enlisted to join The Great War he was only 22. His unit, the 48th Battalion, embarked on their voyage from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A60 Aenas on April 11th 1916. He died on board the ship of a illness (Cerebro spinal meningitis). He died on 10th June 1916. He was buried at Hollybrook Memorial, Southhampton, England. His brother Martin Farrell was also in the Australian Army he managed to return to Australia on 22nd September 1919.

Died on this date – 10th June…… Thomas Farrell was born at Port Augusta West, South Australia on 23rd June, 1894.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 4th March, 1916 as a 21 year old, single, Labourer from Iron Knob, South Australia.

Private Thomas Farrell, Service number 1662, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on HMAT Aeneas (A60)  (as per Embarkation Roll) on 11th April, 1916 with the 48th Infantry Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements.  

Private Thomas Farrell died at 21.00 on 10th June, 1916 at Sea on board H.M.T. Franconia from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.

(Note: The Embarkation Roll on the Australian War Memorial website & the Statement of Service form & Purport form in the Service Record file for Private Thomas Farrell recorded he “Embarked SS Aeneas 11/4/16”. It is not known if this is correct or if he was transferred to H.M.T. Franconia.) 

He was buried at Sea at 06.15 on 11th June, 1916 from H.M.T. Franconia (Mediterranean Lat 37.15N; Long 6.35E) He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
