Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Leo Augustine DIENER, (Service Number 3755) born at Enmore in 1895, joined the NSWGR as a call boy at Eveleigh locomotive depot in March 1911. In August 1913 he was made a foreman’s junior clerk. In September 1915 he enlisted in the AIF at Holdsworthy.

Leo Augustine DIENER (Service Number 3755) was born at Enmore in 1895,. He joined the NSW Government Railways as a call boy at Eveleigh locomotive depot in March 1911.  In August 1913 he was made a foreman’s junior clerk.  In September 1915 he enlisted in the AIF at Holdsworthy.

He embarked from Sydney in January 1916. He went v to France via Egypt. He arrived in March.  He had three weeks in hospital with Influenza before re-joining his battalion at the end of May.  Between 22nd and 25th July he was reported wounded and missing. A year later a Court of Enquiry amended this to ‘killed in action’.  He was buried ‘in the vicinity of Pozières’. 

After the war his actual place of burial could not be found, and he is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
