Biography contributed by John Oakes
Albert William John TALLENTIRE was born at Lismore, NSW, on 1st October 1891. His parents were William Tallentire and Lilly Tallentire (née Livingstone). He had an older sister, Sarah, whose birth was registered at Lismore in 1890. Albert’s mother died in 1891 (death registered at Lismore) so it is likely she died as a result of giving birth to him. His father married Fanny (née Sallaway) at Lismore in 1896. They had three daughters, all born at Ballina, NSW (the oldest of whom they named Lily). However, it was left to Albert’s maternal grandmother, Sarah Livingstone of North Lismore, NSW, to rear Albert from infancy.
Albert joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways at Lismore on 24th November 1913 as a wagon builder in the Locomotive Branch. On 8th February 1914 his position was confirmed as permanent. On 29th August 1914 he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces.
He joined the AIF at Lismore on 23rd August 1914. He was allocated to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment with the rank of Trooper (Service Number 571). He nominated his maternal grandmother as his next of kin. However, when the time came to issue his war medals in the 1920s they went to his father, as the law required. His father also made a claim for some of Albert’s savings.
Albert embarked for Egypt aboard HMAT A15 ‘Star of England’ at Brisbane on 24th September 1914. It is not recorded when or where he disembarked in Egypt. In his Roll of Honour circular for the Australian War Memorial, his maternal grandmother states that he was one of the members of the 2nd Light Horse Regiment who volunteered to go as infantry to the Dardanelles.
On the night of 13th and 14th May 1915 he was reported missing in action. It was later confirmed at a Court of Enquiry that he died due to the effects of bullet wounds received in action.
Albert’s grave is in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. His place of association is Lismore, NSW.
