Distinguished Conduct Medal
'For gallantry and continuous good work during the period 25 February to 16 September 1918. On the 4 July, near Villers-Bretonneux, east of Amiens, he was in charge of a mortar which was taking part in a preliminary bombardment. A bomb was passed to him, and it was discovered, just as it was dropped into the gun, that the safety tape had come off the bomb. He promptly put his hand down the barrel, pulled the bomb out, and threw it over the parapet. His courage and initiative saved three lives.'
