Alan arrived in Australia in 1910 with his mother Agnes Hudson Hay Foster and sister Ellen. They had been sponsored by Agnes's brother-in-law, John Hay, who lived in Sutton Street Redcliffe. Alan attended Humpybong State School and was single when he enlisted in 1916. Mother Agnes was living at Woody Point at that time. After the war Alan married Mary Alice Smith in 1920 and the couple settled at Woody Point for many years before relocating to Woombye.
