Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Horace John Butler only joined his unit in France one day before he went missing at Pozieres. His death was not confirmed until July 1917 as being on 5 August 1916.

He had come to Australia from England, some time after 1900. Horace married Emily Kathleen Smith in Sydney during 1915. He was the father to a boy, Arthur Butler, who was born three months after his father died.

The Imperial War Graves located the remains of Horace John Butler during 1927, and they were buried in the Serre Rd. No.2 Cemetery at Beaumont Hamel in France.
