Thomas's parents were Thomas Hutchinson and Grace Winn. Thomas was living at Samsonvale and working as a labourer when he enlisted 16th October 1916 in Brisbane. Thomas attained the rank of Lance Corporal on 15 July 1918 after his fighting near Hamel. Thomas returned home and initially lived at Eagle Junction with some family members.
