Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Thomas James Sutton was the son of Thomas and Marrie Louisa Sutton, of Tarra Valley, South Gippsland, Victoria, and the only one of three sons who survived.

His younger brother, 1552 Pte. David George Sutton 15th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Quinns Post, Gallipoli on 29 May 1915, aged 19. An older brother, 1559 Pte. William Henry Sutton 49th Battalion AIF was also killed in action in France on 11 August 1918, aged 31.

Thomas Sutton landed on Gallipoli to join the 22nd Battalion on 24 October 1915. Within three weeks he was evacuated to Malta, dangerously ill with pneumonia and enteric, caused by the freezing cold conditions of Gallipoli during November 1915. Due to his illness, he was returned to Australia a few months later, 9 February 1916.
