Biography contributed by Nicole Pereira

Guzman Pereira, also known as Gunman Pereira, was born on the 30th of October 1892 in Coruna, Spain. He was the husband of Mrs. Ethel Pereira, with whom he had one child, whose personal information is not known. Guzman Pereira’s schooling is unknown. However, he worked as a cook prior to the war.

Guzman enlisted as an A.I.F private on the 16th of October 1916 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, at the age of 24 years and 10 months. After enlisting in the A.I.F, Guzman embarked from Fremantle in Western Australia, on ship HMAT Persic A34. From there he was sent to training for his journey ahead as a private in the 44th Infantry Battalion. He boarded the ship on 29 December in 1916, with the 44th battalion and 1 to 6 Reinforcements (from June – December 1916).

Private Pereira disembarked in Devonport on 3 March 1917.  On 19 June 1917, he proceeded overseas from South Hampton and on 9 July 1917, he was taken on strength in the field. On 28 April 1918, he was reported sick and therefore was admitted to hospital from the unit and rejoined the battalion on 6 August 1918.

After the war was over, he returned home to 51 Leviathan Street, South Boulder, West Australia. On the 30th of September 1924, he had a victory medal issued to him, numbered 16368.

The date and cause of Guzman Pereira’s death remains unknown.
