An Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

90 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 18th January 1932, Private Walter Edward Harman, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-1151), gas main & service layer (Newcastle Gas & Coke Company Limited), from 32 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 34 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. ANGLICAN 2-113. 57.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 15th January 1874 to George and Frances Harman, Walter enlisted September 1914 with the 1st Battalion at Adamstown, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 12.5.1915 (GSW scalp), 22.5.1915 (GSW thigh, slight).

Admitted to hospital 18.7.1916 (neurasthenia, or severe fatigue).

Walter returned home April 1917, being discharged on the 14th May 1917.

Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Walter’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

There were another 3 Harman family members who were living at 32 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales who served with the 1st A.I.F.

Private Arthur George Harman, 2nd & 54th Battalions, Reg No-2824, died 23.12.1945, Beresfield Crematorium.

Private Frank Charles Harman, 1st Battalion & 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, Reg No-2593, died 18.7.1961.

Private James May Harman, 19th & 20th Battalions, Reg No-1087, died 1.12.1949, resting at Sandgate Cemetery. ANGLICAN 2-113. 57.
