Louis John Woodland was the son of John and Susan Woodland and was born in Wodonga Victoria. His mother died when he was only seven years of age. Louis served throught 1916, 1917 and most of 1918 before he was wounded on the 23 September 1918. The wound was to his legs and must have very severe. He went through several dressing stations before arriving at the 6th General Hospital in Rouen four days later. Louis John Woodland passed away in the hospital after a fortnight's struggle with his wounds.

His brother, 3660 Private Charles William Woodland, 59th Battalion, had died of wounds aged 23 on 21 July 1916 after the Battle of Fromelles. A third brother, 2514 Pte Arthur Woodland, 57th Battalion, returned to Australia on 21 March 1919 aged 24. All three brothers worked as carpenters prior to enlistment.
