The only survivor of four brothers who went to war, Walter William Sykes returned to Australia in April 1919. He died only 4 years later in May 1923. It was reported in the local papers, that 'Mr Walter William Sykes, of Arnciffe, and formerly of Goulburn, died in the Tamworth District Hospital on Saturday morning from gastritis and septic peritonitis, after a short but painful illness. The deceased was in his 37th year and leaves a widow and two sons aged 10 and 7 years respectively. The late Mr. Sykes was a returned soldier, being the only one of four brothers to return, the other three being killed on active service. He is survived by two brother and five sisters, and the deceased had a wide circle of friends and was much respected by all who knew him.'
