Richard Hall Bence was born in 1894 in Kirkstall, a small town in south east Victoria. His mother was Harriet Bence. He worked as a labourer. 3rd March 1915 he enlisted for Australian Imperial Force. He embarked on 12 of August 1916 on the HMAT Ballarat in Adelaide to 32 infantry battalion. 2/8/1917 he contracted pneumonia while in the field and was admitted to hospital, but on 21/8/1917 he recovered. He spent the remainder of the war on duties in England, incuding guarding prisoners of war.
He had blue eyes and brown hair and was 5-foot 6inches (167cm). He had perfect vision and a scar on his left arm. He was discharged in 27/5/1919.
