Military Cross Recommendation - 16 August 1916

At Pozieres for gallantry and dashing leadership in support of Capt. Devonshire on the 4/5th August, he showed coolness and ability.

LATE LIEUT. B. WHYBORN.
The late Lieut. B. Whyborn was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Whyborn, of Denial Bay, and was born at Charlton street. Exeter, on February 26, 1894. He attended the Lefevre's Peninsula Day School, and the Semaphore Baptist Sunday School. At the age of 11 years he went with his parents to Denial Bay, and lived in the district, until the time of his enlist ment. He joined the A.I.F. in March, 1915. He was the first volunteer from Denial Bay. He left Australia in May 1915. The regiment to which he was attached was stationed in Egypt for some time, and from there his company was sent to Gallipoli, where he stayed until the evacuation. He took part in the operation of withdrawal. He went to France in March of this year. He was given a commission as second lieutenant, and for work done at Poziexcs on August 4 was promoted to first lieutenant. On November 18 the sad news reached liis home that he was killed in action on November 5.

First of six children. Born on the 26th of February 1894 at Exeter, South Australia to Mr and Mrs David John Whyborn and Catherine Matilda Annie Whyborn, nee Daniel.
