Son of James Joseph Vanner and Emma Vanner nee Bond of Heywood, Victoria.

Prior to enlisting he had been a member of several rifle clubs.

Commenced return to Australia on 5 April 1919 aboard HT Wiltshire disembarking on 29 May 1919

During 1919c Herbert married Ella Grange Turley in Victoria.
