Winterhalter are in receipt of the following letter from their son, Gus., who wrote them on October 8 a week before he was killed-wishing them a Happy Christmas and New Year: - "You will be glad to know that I came out of a stunt which had taken place a few days ago, fit and well, and without a scratch: I was partly buried twice in the mud by the explosion of shells, but I am still going good. I miss my mates, who, by the way, were unfortunate enough to get wounded, but still that cannot he helped. I suppose they are in Blighty by this. I received mother's letter the day after the battle; also one from brother. The boronia, did not have much smell about it."

Death Notice Albany Advertiser: WINTERHALTER.- Killed in action, Gus, dearly beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Winterhalter, and brother of Mattie, Rudolph, Lena, and Julia. Deeply mourned. The Daily News Perth: Mr. A. Winterhalter, of Grey-street. Albany, has been notified by the defense authorities that his son. Private G. Winterhalter has been killed in action while fighting somewhere in France with the A.I.F. The Albany Advertiser: Mr. A. Winterhalter, of Grey-street, received word last Saturday to the effect that his son, Private G. Winterhalter, of the A.I.F., had been killed in action while fighting "somewhere in France."
