Robert Marshall was born in Sydney, NSW around 1885.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 19th June, 1916 as a 31 year old Motor Driver/Chauffeur from Camperdown, Sydney, NSW.


Private Marshall, Service number 6120, arrived in England on 10th January, 1917 for further training at Larkhill & Windmill Hill, Wiltshire, England.

He joined 37th Battalion at the front on 1st September, 1917.

Private Marshall was sent to Hospital with Gastritis on 12th October, 1917.

He was invalided back to England & after being granted furlo reported to No. 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire.

On 26th August, 1918 Private Marshall rejoined his Battalion.

Private Robert Marshall was wounded in action on 1st September, 1918 with shrapnel wound to left knee.

He was invalided to England & admitted to 2/1st Southern General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham, England on 9th September, 1918.


Private Robert Marshall died at 10.40 am on 3rd October, 1918 at 2/1st Southern General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham from wounds received in action – gunshot wounds to left knee & gastric ulcer haemorrhage perforation.

He was buried in Dumbarton Cemetery, Scotland and is included on the Stewart family headstone.
