Son of Sidney McKenzie Arthur Valentine and Olive Catherine Valentine nee Sinclair of Morawa, WA. Sidney also served returning to Australia on 22 September 1917 having served with the Imperial Camel Corps

Between 16 May 1919 and 23 August 1919 John attended the Forrestry Department, Edinburgh University

Commenced return to Australia on 22 September 1919 aboard HT Port Sydney disembarking on 4 November 1919
