Alfred Lowe Smith was born at Mount Pleasant on the 4th January 1894. At the age of 22 he enlisted in Adelaide on the 19th October 1916, giving his trade as that of an electric plater. Smith named his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith of Balhannah, as his next of kin. His younger brothers Allan Charles Smith and William Woods Smith also enlisted.
Alfred and Allan left Adelaide on board the Afric on the 7th November 1916. Alfred was in Parkhouse Hospital, England with sickness for 10 days and proceeded to France on the 13th March 1917 and joined his unit, the 50th Battalion at Etaples on the 18th March.
On the 2nd April 1917 Smith was wounded in action in France, sustaining a severe gunshot wound to his right ankle. He was admitted to Eastbourne Military Hospital in England on the 9th April. Smith’s mother was advised of his wounding on the 24th April.
Smith continued to serve in England until, due to defective eyesight, he was returned to Australia on board Leicestershire on the 9th December 1918 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 16th March 1919.
